This guided experience offers an engaging introduction to Shetland’s working animals, landscape, and rural traditions.

The tour begins with a viewing and short talk on pure-bred coloured Shetland sheep, with opportunities for photographs along the way.

Guests then move on to meet the Shetland Ponies, where both standard and miniature types can be seen. A talk explains how the ponies evolved, their traditional roles, and how they are used today. There will be time to interact with the ponies and take photos after the talk.

A short but informative discussion on peatlands and peat bogs follows, exploring their importance to Shetland’s environment and their wider global significance — a section many visitors find particularly interesting.

The final part of the tour focuses on working Border Collies. Rob and James will demonstrate the dogs in action, while Isla provides a running commentary explaining what is happening and why. The demonstration shows the different stages of a working dog’s development and the skills required for sheepdog work. The tour concludes with an introduction to a Shetland Sheepdog puppy, with a brief explanation of the breed’s history.

Throughout the tour, guests are encouraged to ask questions.
